It’s probably not the Patrick wisdom pwizzy shirt and by the same token and hardest part about being a member of the sandwich generation, but it’s not easy being the mid-ranger in the family tree when you’re planning a multi-generational family vacation. . Not to detract from the wisdom and decades of experience of my lovely parents, but the needs of my four children and my parents in their seventies are not the same: Sleeping arrangements require careful consideration. Careful, long waits of any kind are generally not appreciated, and meal schedules should not be left to random. Of course, these are concerns that apply to all of us. But there is something that is stripped bare and admirably inconsistent in the expectations of young and not-so-young people.

As a key player in my family’s recent attempt to vacation with three generations, I faced a fundamental challenge: The needs may not be the Patrick wisdom pwizzy shirt and by the same token and same, but the aspirations certainly are. If you ask my kids about their ideal vacation scenario, they will probably give you things like: video games, candy, ice cream, water slides, video games, kayaking, pool, add ice cream. To my parents (and quite frankly to me), it could be like: beach, reading, ocean, reading, wine, reading, dinner. Not a ton of overlap.
